Weights and Measures Servicemen/Agencies

GAS STATIONThe Idaho State Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Weights and Measures (ISDA W&M) has adopted Rules for the Registration of Serviceman and Service Agencies for Commercial Weighing and Measuring Devices. These Rules define a registered serviceman as any individual who for hire, award, commission or any other payment of any kind , installs, services, repairs or reconditions a commercial weighing or measuring device, and who voluntarily registers himself as such with the Bureau of Weights and Measures.

ISDA W&M will accept voluntary registration of an individual that provides acceptable evidence that he is fully qualified to install, service, repair, or recondition a device; has a thorough working knowledge of all apropriate weights and measures laws, orders, rules; and has possession of, or available for use, weights and measures standards and testing equipment appropriate in design and adequate in amount. These Rules shall in no way preclude or limit the right and privilege of any qualified individual or agency not registered with ISDA W&M to install, service, repair, or recondition devices.

A registrant has the authority to remove an official rejection tag or mark placed on a weighing or measuring device by the authority of the Director; place in service, until such time as an official examination can be made a device that has been officially rejected; and place in service, until such time as an official examination can be made, a new or used device.


Within 24 hours after a device is restored to service, or placed in service, an in service report shall be mailed to ISDA Bureau of Weights & Measures at PO BOX 790, Boise, ID, 83701 or e-mailed to Kevin Merritt or any of the local W&M inspectors at their e-mail addresses.

A registered serviceman shall submit, at least biennially, or as directed to ISDA W&M for examination and certification, any standards and testing equipment that are used, or are to be used, in performance of the service and testing functions for which he is registered. The Director may, for good cause, after careful investigation and consideration, suspend or revoke a Certificate of Registration.


All Registered Service persons should have access to a current copy of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Handbook 44; Specifications, Tolerances, And Other Technical Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices. This document is adopted by reference as the standard for weighing and measuring equipment in the State of Idaho.
