Official samples  
    Official samples must be drawn by a certified state or federal inspector. In Idaho, you may call the Phytosanitary Certificate line at (208) 332-8629 to schedule an appointment with a state inspector.

  1. Samples should be representative of the lot to be tested. Unofficial subitted samples are not considered representative of a lot for Phytosanitary Certificate purposes.  
       
  2. Please see the Tests and Fees page for sample sizes.  
       
  3. Place untreated samples in a double paper bags or a seed envelope and seal.  
       
  4. Mark the identity of the sample on the outside of the bag. Include information on the host, pathogen test requested, variety, lot number, weight and origin of the lot. A pathology submission form is available on the Forms, Reports & Publications section.  
       
  5. Ship or hand deliver to :

  Field samples  
  1. Sample must be representative of symptoms and severity in the field and must contain the correct portions of the plant depending on the symptoms. If in doubt, take the entire plant if possible  
       
  2. Place samples in a plastic bag with any roots wrapped separately in plastic. Please remove water prior to bagging.  
       
  3. Samples must be fresh and in good condition. Plant material can be kept in a cooler or refrigerator until delivery.  
       
  4. Mark the identity of the sample on the outside of the bag. Include information on the host, site location and conditions, date, incidence and severity of symptoms, and contact information. A pathology submission form is available on the Forms, Reports and Publications section.  
       
  5. Rapid delivery, hand delivered or overnight, is best. Please do not ship samples on Fridays.
